Advancing Neuroscience Across Two Continents
Welcome to the Maina Lab, a research Group led by Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina. Our lab uniquely spans two continents, operating from the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) at Yobe State University, Nigeria, and hosted within Sussex Neuroscience, University of Sussex, UK. This dual setup allows us to conduct pivotal basic research on the mechanism of neurodegeneration in tauopathies, focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia with special emphasis on understanding how ancestral backgrounds influence disease pathogenesis. To this end, we generate and utilize induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) derived from diverse indigenous African donors. Learn more about our research projects.
Beyond research, the Maina Lab is committed to promoting diversity and advancing scientific capacity in Africa. Dr Maina’s role as a Special Adviser for Science to the Yobe State Government of Nigeria and founder of many science initiatives enables us to link community, policy, and public engagement with science, fostering a unique ecosystem for scientific progress in Africa.
